A DESCRIPTION OF THE POLICY ANALYSIS AND RESEARCH GROUP (PARG), UNN

 

The policy Analysis and Research Group (PARG) was founded on the 17th of February 1998 by students of the department of Economics in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. With Prof Charles C. Soludo as the pioneer staff Adviser. Presently the group is duly registered with the student affairs department of the University and held in honor by the Department of Economics where it is housed.

 

The group is tailored towards helping building economists and undergraduates at large attain academic excellence through regular group discussions and academic exercises such an debates, seminars, workshops etc. PARG tutors its members on method and processes of conducting statistical and econometric researchers, grounded in sound economic models using data from multiple sources on different policy issues and well as how to interpret research findings through written analysis for  audiences. The group allows members work together in a collaborative atmosphere that is both process and result oriented. Our unique relationship with the staff of the Department ensures their support for our programs and activities.

 

The Policy Analysis and Research Group, recognizes the importance of the acquisition of research skills, especially analytical research skills as it involves critical thinking skills and the evaluation of facts and information relative to the research being conducted. The groups lays a heavy emphasis on research, with the overall aim of enhancing the research, writing and presentation skills of its members.

 

 In today’s competitive world, communication skills are the most sought after quality of an educated person. Reading, writing and listening skills, are the three most important communication skills for students. PARG recognizes the immense importance of the acquisition and mastery of both verbal and non-verbal communication skills, and as such members are taught to be clear, concise and focused, to tailor their messages for different audience and also listen to the views of others. PARG also recognizes the power of teamwork that creates synergy, where the sum is greater than the parts. All members of the group are taught the very important skills of working within teams, the ability to manage and delegate to others and take on responsibility, including the art of building positive relationship the help everyone to achieve out set goals and objectives.

 

Finally, leadership plays a key role in the existence of PARG, since a majority of its activities require members to work with various teams, leadership skills and hence built and fostered, the potential to motivate others as well as efficiently delegate tasks, set deadlines and lead by good examples are enhanced by membership of PARG, as the group’s organizational structure makes it possible for a large number of our members learn and excel in various leadership roles. Being one of the oldest and most vibrant undergraduate research group in the university, we recognize the challenges confronting our society in this century and bring our youthful energy to bear in finding solutions to these problems through research that encourages constructive debate amongst ourselves on alternative ways to make our society better.
